A vision becoming reality: National Organic Action Plan for Canada

The organic sector recently unveiled bold plans to accelerate growth: a robust organic action plan is taking shape through a coalition of the national associations—Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA), Canadian Organic Growers, and Organic Federation of Canada—working together. The National Organic Action Plan for Canada is positioned as an engine for accelerated advancement. This comprehensive strategy acknowledges the pivotal role of organic practices, underscored by benchmarks, objectives, and strategies designed to fortify the organic supply chain and amplify the global appetite for organic products.

“The time is ripe for Canada to put in place a national action plan to propel growth of the sector to the next level,” says Tia Loftsgard, COTA’s executive director. “The commitment of Canadians to the organic movement is unmistakable. Boasting a value exceeding $10.26 billion in 2021, Canada has maintained its position of the world's fifth-largest organic market.”

COTA has drafted the framework of the plan and has begun discussions with government and industry on the elements to refine the plan and the targets and see where it can move forward. “It is a comprehensive long-term plan that will have both short- and longer-term priorities.”

COTA says its goal is to work collaboratively with industry and government to ensure its success, adding that the plan will be fully unveiled as it comes into clarity.
