Learning from your busiest season

By Adam Martin

As the saying goes, ‘necessity is the mother of invention.’ This adage holds particularly true for natural health food retailers, especially during the busiest times of the year from November to January.

These months present a unique opportunity to learn about what your store does well, where improvements are needed, and how to be most efficient, especially in a tight labour market. Taking these lessons into slower seasons can help to create an agenda for what to work on as things slow down.

 Identify strengths and celebrate successes

The period from November to January is often the busiest time for natural health food stores. This influx of customers provides a valuable opportunity to identify what your store does well.

Take note of the products that are flying off the shelves, promotions that resonate with customers, and feedback that highlights your strengths. Celebrating these successes not only boosts morale but also reinforces the practices that contribute to your store's success.

By understanding and leveraging your strengths, you can continue to build on what works and create a positive shopping experience for your customers.

 Pinpoint areas for improvement

While it's important to celebrate successes, it's equally crucial to identify areas where your store can improve. The busy season can reveal pain points that may not be as apparent during slower times.

Pay attention to customer complaints, inventory shortages, and any operational inefficiencies. Use this feedback to make data-driven decisions on how to address these issues.

Whether it's improving staff training, optimizing inventory management, or enhancing store layout, taking proactive steps to address areas for improvement can lead to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Optimize efficiency in a tight labor market

In a tight labor market, efficiency becomes paramount. All operators have a long list of projects that they know they should get to, but busy times can help you prioritize and ensure that your agenda provides great payback for you and your customers.

Whether it is new investments in technology, further cross training for your staff, or eliminating wasteful work, every opportunity will have a spotlight when your stores are at their peak. Take advantage of this data while you have it.

Every challenge comes with a great learning opportunity, so don’t miss this one! Make sure to have your staff support you in finding as many growth opportunities as possible and debrief those learnings when things do slow down.

Enjoy the holidays and the kickoff to 2025! I am sure with all your new learnings, next year is going to be a great one.
